Breed Portrait – The Cockapoo

Cockapoos are one of the most popular crossbreeds in the world.

They have captured the hearts of many people and are one of the most common breeds I help in my daily trainings.

In this post we will delve into their origin and distinct behavioural traits and training needs.

Origin of the Cockapoo

The Cockapoo breed originated in the United States during the 1950s, gaining popularity as a result of their unique combination of traits inherited from their Poodle and Cocker Spaniel parents.

The intentional breeding of Cockapoos aimed to create a hypoallergenic and affectionate companion dog.

Today, the Cockapoo is recognized as one of the most sought-after crossbreeds, cherished for their charming personalities and versatile adaptability.

Sociability

Cockapoos are renowned for their friendly and affectionate nature. They thrive on human companionship and enjoy being part of the family. However, this strong attachment can sometimes lead to separation anxiety when left alone for longer periods of time (1-3hr) or simply, if this has not been trained properly from a young age.

To prevent this, dogs should be gradually acclimatised to being alone and providided with mental and physical stimulation beforehand. This process should start during puppyhood.

Intelligence and Trainability

Derived from their Poodle heritage, Cockapoos are highly intelligent and eager to please. They excel in obedience training and enjoy learning new tricks. As a behaviourist, I recommend to understand the needs of your Cockapoo first and recognising, what they like to do and how much. Healthy boundaries, consistency and patience are key to success.

Moderate to High Energy Levels

Cockapoos possess a moderate to high energy level, necessitating regular exercise to prevent restlessness or undesirable behaviours is crucial. Engaging them in structured play sessions, regular walks, or agility training is essential for maintaining their physical and mental well-being. Be aware, that crossing working cocker spaniels with poodles can create very energetic dogs. Be sure to ask the breeder, so you can reassess if this dog is right for you.

Early Socialisation

This plays a vital role in shaping a Cockapoo’s behaviour (just like any other breed!). Introducing them to various environments, people, and other animals during their puppyhood is important. Controlled and positive exposure to new experiences helps build their confidence and reduces the likelihood of fear-based behaviours in adulthood.

Behavioural Challenges

While Cockapoos are generally well-behaved, they may exhibit certain behavioural challenges, often due to lack of fulfilment & socialisation, genetical predispositions or medical reasons.

Excessive barking, digging, pulling on lead or resource guarding tendencies are not uncommon.

It’s important to prevent and address these behaviours promptly. Finding the cause of these behaviours, is the first step to modifying unwanted behaviour in Cockapoos.
