Training Older Dogs: Unlocking Potential at Any Age
15 December 20241. Shower Your Dog Before Walks
This is a very effective strategy to keep your dog cooler during the walk. Focus on wetting their head, paws and back. Studies have shown, that cooling the head can improve your dog’s overall temperature regulation. This simple step can make a noticeable difference in their comfort throughout the walk.
2. Incorporate Play into Early & Late Walks
I recommend this even if the weather is not hot. Be sure to include play – specifically games – when you’re out on walks. Your dog will love this interaction with you and will feel great afterwards. It will, of course, also help tire them out!
3. Offer a Raw Bone or a Frozen Treat
This can be especially beneficial for older dogs or puppies, providing them with extra mental stimulation. Depending on the treat, it can also help cool them down. For puppies, beef ribs are a great option, while larger dogs, like our Rottweilers, enjoy raw, meaty lamb bones.
I hope these tips will be useful. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!
